In 1914, Oskar Barnack, employed at the Ernst-Leitz-Werke in Wetzlar and a pioneer of photography, constructed the very first Leica, the Leitz Camera. The construction of this ‘Ur-Leica’ marks the birth of convenient 35 mm Leica photography with vastly increased creative scope, affording the photographer countless new forms of expression. On the occasion of this special anniversary, the programme for 2014 will see not only numerous events (including the official opening of the new Leica factory in the Leitz Park in Wetzlar in May), but also a series of centennial editions.
