Leica exhibition concept for photokina 2014
At this year’s photokina in Cologne from 16 to 21 September 2014, Leica Camera AG will once again be presenting unique photo exhibitions and showcasing projects by internationally renowned photographers and prominent artists. The focus of this year’s exhibition concept for the Leica Galerie in hall 1 at the Cologne exhibition centre is on impressive art photography from the world of music. The exhibitions will be curated by Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, director general of Leica Galerien International and Inas Fayed, editor-in-chief of Leica Fotografie International (LFI).
The exhibition builds a bridge between two worlds that enrich and enhance each other: both music and photography communicate without words. In its own way, each appeals to the senses, awakens emotions and transports us to states of euphoria, sadness or meditative contemplation. Together, they reveal new perspectives in the respective contrasting genres.
This is appropriately reflected by the variety evident in the exhibition portfolio. It embraces all facets of music photography, from concert images and extremely personal artist portraits and reportage photography with exciting glimpses behind the scenes at concerts. The photographers selected include Jim Marshall (1936–2010), the legendary US rock photographer. A total of three of his projects will be shown: photos from the last Beatles concert and the Rolling Stones tour from 1972, as well as a collection of images captured in the summer of love in and around Haight Street, the legendary quarter of San Francisco.
Other photographers, like Glen Craig (‘A day in the life of Miles Davis’), Jürgen Schadeberg (‘Jazz in South Africa’) and Anton Corbijn, with a series of self-portraits in which he slips into various roles of deceased musicians whom he likes or liked (for instance Frank Zappa, Janis Joplin, and Elvis Presley), add further depth and colour to the broad spectrum of the Leica Galerie programme. Lois Hechenblaikner broadens the spectrum with his photographic music concept with shots of folk music fans and their concert visits.
In addition, the exhibition will also showcase the work of musicians who have embraced photography as a second passion. They include the English jazz-pop singer-songwriter Jamie Cullum, who captured impressions of his most recent US tour in June 2014, and Georges Yammine, the violinist. He captured everyday scenes of rehearsals and musical snapshots during his engagement with Daniel Barenboim’s West-Eastern Divan Orchestra. Bryan Adams, the Canadian rock singer, composer and photographer will be presenting ‘Wounded: the legacy of war’, his portfolio with a series of portraits of wounded combat veterans. Till Brönner, trumpeter, singer and composer, will be showing portraits of his musical friends and colleagues.
This year’s exhibition program is rounded off by award-winning portfolios from Leica cultural projects. Alongside the winning portfolios from the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2014, the exhibition will be showcasing the work of René Burri, the winner of the Leica Hall of Fame Awards 2013, with his portfolio entitled ‘The Germans’ (from the 1950s), and the project “Wanderlust” (teNeues) from this year’s award winner Thomas Hoepker, a retrospective of his outstanding oeuvre. An additional special exhibition will be dedicated to the memory of German photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus, who was killed in Afghanistan earlier this year.
