The first special edition of the centennial year: the Leica S Edition 100
Leica Camera AG is celebrating 100 years of Leica photography
This year, Leica Camera AG is celebrating 100 years of Leica photography. In 1914, Oskar Barnack, employed at the Ernst-Leitz factory in Wetzlar and a pioneer of photography, constructed the very first Leica, the Leitz Camera. The construction of this ‘Ur-Leica’ marks the birth of convenient 35 mm Leica photography with vastly increased creative scope, affording the photographer countless new forms of expression. On the occasion of this special anniversary, the programme for 2014 will see not only numerous events (including the official opening of the new Leica factory in the Leitz Park in Wetzlar in May), but also a series of centennial editions.
This begins with the first special centennial edition, the Leica S Edition 100. The centennial edition comprises a Leica S medium-format system camera and two of the most popular S lenses, both with a central shutter for exceptional versatility in a wide range of situations – the Leica Summarit-S 70 mm f/2.5 ASPH. CS and the Leica Elmarit-S 30 mm f/2.8 ASPH. CS. The Leica Summarit-S 70 mm f/2.5 ASPH. CS is ideal as a standard focal length for many photographic applications. Its extreme speed and outstanding imaging performance guarantee outstanding results at all apertures and distance settings. The angle of view of the Leica Elmarit-S 30 mm f/2.8 ASPH. CS corresponds to that of a 24 mm lens in 35 mm format and opens up new creative horizons in image composition – in particular for architectural and landscape photography.
A particular feature of the centennial edition is the special engraving – the centennial logo – which appears on the body of the Leica S and on both S lenses. The products are supplied in a Leica version of the Rimowa Topas Multiwheel Cabin Trolley in bright aluminium with high-quality inner compartment. Thanks to its compact size, the case is ideal for use as hand luggage on flights. When packed in the case, the camera and lenses are safe and sound – even when shooting on location under extreme conditions.
The centennial editions of the Leica S camera and the Leica Summarit-S 70 mm f/2.5 ASPH. CS and Leica Elmarit-S 30 mm f/2.8 ASPH. CS lenses will be available from Leica Stores only as a complete set from the end of February. The individual items will not be available separately.
