15th Photo auction

18th November 2016, 5pm (CET)

One highlight of the upcoming Photo Auction is the following print: Dennis Stock (1928-2010) - James Dean on Times Square, New York 1955

Dennis Stock, who was brought on to work at Magnum as a “Hollywood photographer” by Robert Capa in 1951, met James Dean in 1954 through the director Nicholas Ray at the preview of his film East of Eden. Suspecting that Dean would become a star, Stock proposed an essay about the then twenty-four-year-old actor to Life magazine. The photo series turned into a legacy, especially the iconic photograph James Dean on Times Square, present as
early print from the 1960s. It was to posthumously fuel Dean’s image as the tortured, melancholy, boisterous rebel. Chance and staged elements coincided perfectly—the rain, Dean’s stoop, the puddle, the reflection of the actor’s contours, the cigarette in the corner of his mouth, Times Square disappearing in the mist—all this compositional finesse and these happy accidents helped the photograph to become the icon it deserves to be.
