Jeff Mermelstein „Twirl / Run" - August 2010 / Images: (c) Jeff Mermelstein, Courtesy Rick Wester Fine Art. Inc.
Visitors and employees at the Leica factory in Solms are greeted with exhibitions in the foyer that change each month and deal with an extremely wide range of themes. The aim is to present the entire spectrum of artistic and journalistic work carried out with Leica cameras, as well as the company's own cultural projects.
For the photo exhibition "Twirl / Run", Jeff Mermelstein put together a selection of photos he took on his voyage of discovery through the streets of New York. It's not the luxurious world of business with its office complexes that makes the metropolis so special for him, but life on the street - chaotic, spontaneous and coincidental.
The story of how his photo project "Twirl / Run" originated has a similar background. While archiving and viewing his many negatives, Mermelstein happened to notice a gender-specific pattern of behavior he had captured time and again in his photography of people in the street: Gestures - omnipresent and yet arbitrary - that could, with a wink, be categorized as "typically female", "typically male." His female portraits concentrate on young women playing with their hair, lost in thought. Whatever they are doing, wherever they're going, they're absent-mindedly twirling strands of hair round their fingers. The male portraits are quite different. Mermelstein‘s men are hyperactive. Their common feature is movement - walking, almost running, they always seem to be in a great hurry. The exhibited photos and others can be seen in the photo book "Twirl / Run", which was published at the end of 2009.
The photographs were taken with a Leica M6 and Leica Summilux f/1.4/35mm ASPH. lens and are available for sale.
