Hubertus von Hohenlohe - Elegantly Wasted
Visitors and employees at the Leica factory in Solms are greeted with exhibitions in the foyer that change each month and deal with an extremely wide range of themes. The aim is to present the entire spectrum of artistic and journalistic work carried out with Leica cameras, as well as the company's own cultural projects.
In his photo series "Elegantly Wasted", Hubertus von Hohenlohe casts a critical yet humorous eye on our throwaway society. The central theme of his photographs is waste paper. Raised to objet d'art status in his colorful close-ups, it reveals an almost esthetic quality. The viewer is irritated and tries to detect what is really behind the abstract, often artistically curved and bright ‘something'. Taking a closer look, he realizes that the attractive appearance is an illusion. What at first seemed so stylish are in reality piles of trash that tell a tale of waste in our consumer society. As in his first work, Hubertus von Hohenlohe is again a part of his pictures in this photo series. Instead of using reflections to bring himself into his photos, however, his "Elegantly Wasted" project revolves around him as a consumer. After all, by buying and throwing away packaging material we are ultimately all part of the consumer and throwaway society.
Whether as a pop star, downhill skiier, singer or artist, Hubertus von Hohenlohe is both clear and provocative in everything he does. For example, he was the only representative of Mexico and the oldest athlete in the alpine skiing disciplines giant slalom and slalom in the Winter Olympics 2010 in Vancouver, Canada. Having grown up in world many people cannot understand, the prince sets himself apart from the jet-set life of his parents and develops his own individual style as a person and as an artist.
