Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2009
New record number of entries

17/03/2009

Leica Camera AG has registered a new record number of entries for this year's Leica Oskar Barnack Award. The closing deadline for submissions was 1 March 2009, and the jury is now faced with the task of judging over 1200 applications to take part in the renowned competition for professional photographers. This year's number of entrants has therefore increased more than threefold against the figures recorded in previous competitions. Photographers from over 75 countries submitted entries to the competition. The majority of these submissions came from Germany, the USA and France. This significant increase in interest is almost certainly due to the new competition rules introduced on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the competition. These include, for instance, that submissions are now exclusively on an online basis, and that entries are now presented to a wider audience on the Leica website. In addition, this is the first time that the competition includes a 'Newcomers Prize' that addresses all (prospective) photographers aged 25 and under. The jury session will take place on 27 April 2009.
