The latest issue of S Magazine shows fascinating images by German photographer Ellen von Unwerth

With the multiple-award-winning S Magazine, Leica provides an international platform for young talents and established photographers to show their work shot with the Leica S medium format camera. Every issue contains pages of powerful images and shows unusual facets and fascinating perspectives. Issue No. 8 of the magazine appears punctually to the start of photokina with fascinating images by German photographer Ellen von Unwerth.

Without fear of contradiction, Ellen von Unwerth must be considered to be the most influential contemporary fashion photographer and, undeniably, also as one of the most preeminent photographers of recent decades. Known for her unique style, she differs significantly from the male-dominated viewpoint of the genre, above all through her instinctive  and unbiased approach to the depiction of femininity and the female form. This particular characteristic of her work finds the undying appreciation of many of her customers, including Dior, Azzedine Alaïa, Katharine Hamnett, Guess, Guerlain, Clinique, Revlon, Victoria’s Secret, Cacharel, Shiseido, or the premium fashion magazines Harpers Bazaar, Vanity Fair and Vogue. The most famous women of the worlds of art, music, design and fashion place their absolute trust in her not least due to her photographic approach to femininity: Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista, Eva Herzigová, Kate Moss, Nadja Auermann and Naomi Campbell, just as much as Catherine Deneuve, Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Madonna – to name but a few.

Numerous prestigious prizes and awards stand in line with her published works and exhibitions, a representative sample of which are listed here: winner of the La Jolla International Film Festival Award in 2013 and 2014, the ASVOFF x MoBA ‘Fetish’ Grand Prize in 2013,the first prize at the International Festival of Fashion Photography in 1991, and the Lucie Awards – Fashion Layout of the Year in 2012. It is therefore more or less a foregone conclusion, that, this year, Ellen von Unwerth should be chosen to realise her visions exclusively for Issue No. 8 of S Magazine. The images she created are only ostensibly to do with fashion, à la mode. In reality, however – as is the case with the works of all truly great photographers – they all bear the seed of the classic within them.
