“Photography is magic – it’s a time capsule. It’s something that keeps the moment alive,” rock legend Lenny Kravitz explains. The artist has previously collaborated with Leica in 2015, when he designed a special-edition version of the M-P (Typ 240): the M-P “Correspondent” paid homage to the weathered Leica camera Kravitz’s father brought back from his time as a press correspondent in the Vietnam War. The design of the new Leica M Monochrom “Drifter," by contrast, is very much a reflection of the artist’s present persona.
Made for travel
Are You Gonna Go My Way
The camera’s exterior is characterized by an eye-catching trim, along with several consciously untreated brass elements. The striking python-skin look is entirely vegan friendly – the leather alternative was sourced with the aid of fashion designer and animal rights activist Stella McCartney.
Limited to an edition of 125 units, the camera is complemented by the exceptionally fast Leica Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. and 75 f/2 ASPH. lenses, as well as a number of specially selected quality accessories in premium quality. The result is a unique set that is perfect for anyone whose lifestyle is driven by a passion for travel and creativity.
Believe In Me
Lenny Kravitz, born 1964 in Brooklyn as the son of an Afro-American mother and Ukrainian-Jewish father, is not only a world-famous musician, songwriter, producer and actor, but also an avid photographer. In the recording studio, the multi-talented musician tends to play all instruments himself, frequently favoring analogue recording techniques to emphasize the often retro character of his music.
In his capacity as a visual artist, he has not only celebrated great successes with his design company Kravitz Design, but has also established himself as a photographer – exemplified by the publication of his black & white photo book “Flash” in 2015. “I love the quality of Leica’s Monochrom system,“ Kravitz explains. “For me, black & white has a soul that touches me. I tend to see in black & white, it looks more real to me, and more timeless. There’s just something about it.”
“I’m a drifter!”
Always On The Run
The Leica M Monochrom “Drifter” is more than a special-edition camera – it is a celebration of a creative way of life. “I’m a drifter.” Kravitz acknowledges. “That has been my life since I was 15 years old and left home, I’m always on the road.” The set therefore includes not only the camera with matching carrier strap and two high-speed lenses, but also the “Weekender Bag” that holds the entire “Drifter” set along with everything else you might want to take on a spontaneous trip. Two lens cases and two pouches – suitable for the camera as well as accessories such as a charger or spare batteries – complete this unique set.More Details
The “Drifter” edition embodies Kravitz’s creative spirit: the sepia-brown finish of the lenses is intentionally designed to show slight signs of wear over time, allowing each model to develop a unique patina. A trim of premium vegan leather, finished in a stylish python snakeskin pattern, envelops the camera body. The material was sourced by Kravitz’s close friend, fashion designer and animal rights activist Stella McCartney, who uses this leather alternative for many of her own creations.
When comparing the “Drifter” to his first Leica design, the “Correspondent” of 2015, Kravitz explains: “I wanted this camera to still be very natural and rugged, but I wanted it to have a bit more design and glamour to it”.
Constant companion: the essential core
Let Love Rule
At the heart of the “Drifter” edition is a Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) distinguished by an extroverted, stylish exterior design. The camera body has been treated with a special paint in sepia brown; the flash shoe, thumb wheel and shutter button are made of untreated brass, as is the soft-release button – allowing for an appealing patina to develop over time. The trim, which is fashioned from premium-quality vegan leather, is a striking reproduction of python skin; the woven carrying strap also features echoes of the camera’s snakeskin-look body.More Details
The two lenses included in the set – a Leica Summicron-M 28 f/2 ASPH. and Summicron-M 75 f/2 ASPH. – are also finished in brown. In contrast to the standard production model, the Summicron-M 28 f/2 features a built-in, extendable lens hood to match the design of its 75mm counterpart. The design of the front edge of both lens caps and lens hoods continue the theme of unfinished brass.
The set also includes the “The Drifter Traveler” made of brown vegan leather, which not only serves as a camera bag but can also accommodate additional accessories. Two vintage-style protective lens cases pay homage to classic Leica lenses, while the two accompanying all-purpose pouches provide useful storage for the camera or your personal effects.
